Is posting items on eBay worth while
20 January 2026
Well is posting items on eBay worth while? The short answer is “Hell No”, they are a rippoff, lets look in to it closer….
eBay boast on their website that they charge 13.06% + $0.30c per item you sell, you might think that 13.06% isn’t much, but then you have other charges such as PayPal and even a different charge for different categories, so lets see how it actually works. In the example below we use the simple formula:

SO here we go, time to expose something that not many sellers on eBay realise or even know. Lets say you have a product that you want to sell for $44. The $44 is what you want in your pocket but that’s not what will happen, below you will see the true calculation selling something for $44. so let me explain.
Column Y is what you want to receive, Column Z is the actual percentage eBay will charge you for your listing, Column V is the fixed fee eBay charge for sales under $4,000 ($0.40 for sales over $4000), Column X is what the ebay fee is for your listing not including the $0.30c fixed fee, the total column is pretty easy to work out, it is Columns X + V = Total eBay fees including the $0.30c.
Now many sellers forget to calculate their PayPal fees, in this example, they are $1.44, but what EVERYONE FORGETS, PayPal do charge a fee to withdraw your money!! So you see, sellers are getting bent over the table by eBay.
If you want to sell your product for $44.00, you will only receive 37.50 after eBay and PayPal fees are subtracted.

We have included the extra column, the listing price (LP). This column shows what a seller on eBay needs to list his product for to achieve the amount of money he/she wants to receive from their sale, so in our example of selling a product for $44.00, we would have to actually sell on eBay for $51.95 to receive their $44.00 after their sale. So lets just use another quick example, I’m going to sell a product on ebay and want to receive $67 from my sale in to my PayPal account, so what’s the chop? The chop is I would simply need to list my product for $78.62 because eBay would take $9.25 for their fee and $2.04 for PayPal, or I would only receive $57.42 after fees.
If you know how to calculate the ebay fees exactly, please contact us and let us know, because what eBay tell you, isn’t exactly what happens. We have done up a total spreadsheet for sales up to $200 and at no time in the spreadsheet are you charged the usual 13.06%, as a matter of fact, it’s much higher and increases the more higher price you list your product for.

So this is just a simple explaination about eBay fees and hopefully you are potential buyers will understand why sellers do charge, what you would think was expensive.
Now that you know how eBay rip people off, it isn’t the sellers fault, but really when it comes down to it, simply just do noy buy off eBay.
